My bus was rerouted this afternoon because of some street fair, and I had to walk home a different way. What happened then was this --

Isn't that beautiful? The cold with leaves crunching underfoot and the day turning to dusk made this blue piercing, and not just visually (not sure how to explain). It looks like a Globe Roll but I can't be sure. All I'm sure of is that I've gone back and re-looked at this picture a few times tonight, which hasn't happened with a bike photo in a long while.

I saw this pretty green bike in a neighborhood I don't visit nearly as much as I should. After buying a computer battery, and before going to a fun Saturday of drawing trains and drinking cocktails.

The last day of summer was last Thursday. Inevitably, posting will slow a bit in the fall and winter. I'll try my very best to be extra bikevigilant.

Bicycle Film Festival: Street Party

Saturday was full of riding around NYC. After riding to a friend's art exhibit in Bushwick, we rode over the Williamsburg Bridge and into the East Village for the Bicycle Film Festival's block party. It was full of vendors, food, BMX tricks, some great short films, and of course, bikes.

There was a bike valet, which was great for a multicolored tangle of frames; an actual penny farthing; and the license to eat pizza, after riding so many miles ;)

The day was exhausting and fulfilling and hot and delicious. Perfect summer.

And saw this when I walked outside...

There was no great angle from which to take that, but I'm sure you can see it was stunning. The most accurate yellow in this picture to how brilliant this bike was is on the top tube, toward the seat. Went so, so well with those hot pink grips.

Bike Directions from HopStop

Alexandra from HopStop emailed me a week or two ago to let me know of their new bike directions feature. Exciting! The feature is in beta right now, and I fully aim to try it out this summer. It was launched in collaboration with Equinox Gyms (they also brought us the new "calories burned" feature to the service) - pretty smart, yes? There are some mapped routes on the site, and the directions have little labels showing where the bike paths are.

When I asked how the routes were calculated (safest, most direct, bike lanes vs. not, etc.), Alexandra responded with, "We prioritize bike lanes, and highlight them within the contextual route itself and on the overview map. We also consider the fastest trip in our routes in terms of routing bikers from point-A to point-B in the most efficient way possible." Efficient sounds familiar, it is HopStop after all. Their public transit directions have been scarily to-the-minute accurate (way more so than Google Maps) over the years. So I'm excited to see what this is like. You can still use the "send to your phone" option as well, which has always been a nice nod to the whole mobility thing. Happy (and safe) riding!

Saw two stunners on the way to brunch last weekend...

I saw a bunch of these Fujis last spring when i was shopping for my bike; I may have even ridden one. And almost wiped out.

These beautiful wheels were on the diagonal corner. Same color scheme as this one.

My boyfriend's parents were in town this weekend, and we all went for a long walk after getting plates heaped with cheeseburgers and fries for lunch. It was the most bike-ful day of the year, and I went camera happy. I was still a bit fuzzy from the previous night until I saw this:

I'm going to get mine tuned up soon so I can start zooming to noodle shops at dusk with friends. So excited.

I saw this one while walking around a friend's new neighborhood, and stopped in my tracks to take a picture. It made me want to search Etsy for an enamel hair comb, or find a gray cardigan with shiny green buttons in this exact color.

You guys will be seeing more and more posts here soon, the weather is finally beginning to un-stubborn itself. I think. Strange that I never did a post about the poor bikes up to their handlebars in piles of snow this winter - I mostly just felt badly when I'd walk by them.

Also, I may have written about this blog for the first time on cellar door just now. Strange, no?

The golden season

Kinda like the golden hour, but for time of year. End of summer. I threw clothes on with my eyes half open on Saturday morning, filled my tires and rode my bike in the 72° weather to an aluminum-sided diner car under the bridge.

Met my dear friends Brandi and Robby for bloody marys, omelettes with gruyere, bratwurst and salad. Last minute sticky bun, too. Sat next to those shiny moustache handlebars outside.

I was singing The Bike Song to myself for the rest of the day.

Aspen color explosion

Try to ignore the title of this blog for just this one post. I can't just leave the photo on my Flickr page. I went to Aspen for a wedding over the weekend, and minding my own business walked nearly into this:

Isn't that insane? All of these were well over a thousand dollars, and well over a thousand jaw drops. I was taken back to my middle school mall hangout days when I would walk into Candy HQ and walk out with a cellophane bag full of sour straws, candy buttons and gummy sharks.

I saw a guy walking this bike from a coffee shop across the street a few weekends ago, and selfishly hoped he would lock it up nearby so I could take a picture of the beauty.

Isn't that pretty! My friend Ashley told me that "Basso" in Italian means low to the ground. I tried to get my head around the fact that this beautiful color combination now automatically makes me think of Prilosec (thanks a lot, branding), because it really is nice and does not deserve that association.

Two friends and I rode all over the place yesterday. We rode through 2 neighborhoods in Brooklyn and over the Williamsburg Bridge. Then down the East River, past the Manhattan Bridge, and underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. There were sodas and snacks and daydreaming.

My pedal bit my leg, Robby put air in my tires, and we rode to a party back in Brooklyn. There were tacos, grilled corn, Brooklyn Lager, I ran into some friends and met some people. I rode home at 6pm to get ready for yakitori.

I don't know why half the city leaves in the summer; I had wings and helium in my chest.

I spotted this lovely thing while grabbing coffee with Bud this afternoon. It made me want to make a yellow cake with pink icing.

I'm on the lookout for a bike again. Three things about my current bike: that it's from the 70s, that it's a cruiser, and that it's a girl's bike make it next to impossible to carry to and from my walk-up. So it's permanently in my apartment now. What I need: a single speed (fewer gears: lighter, also more nimble for quick streets-of-NY decisions), and a boy's bike (good for hoisting onto my shoulder when carrying up stairs). I hope I find something before it gets too hot to commute.

I was walking around at 4.45pm last night. I wouldn't normally say "last night" when referring to that hour, but since the time changed and it was my first early sunset of the fall, it felt like night.

I should really stop using the "blog this picture" function on Flickr. It's awesome and convenient, but the bigness and wonderfulness of the bike isn't usually shown as easily. I snapped this one on the way to a late dinner with my boyfriend this weeked; my phone captured it in the darkness surprisingly well.

This is my good friend's boyfriend's Bianchi. It's gorgeous. He was cautious of my photographing it; he mentioned that putting exact street corners down for lovely bikes might make it easy for them to be stolen (he noticed another beautiful Bianchi on this blog and mentioned that another fan (a creepy one) could have easily scouted that area to find it).

As I stumbled out of Hanger Bar in a haze last night (it was around 12.45am), I stopped dead at this bike. It was so beautiful, guys. The handlebars match the frame. I mean, come on. Maybe it would have been perfect with a white seat, but I loved it to death. I wanted it to be Tony's sister. This girl cruiser was on 3rd Street and Avenue B in the Lower East Side, Manhattan. The photo is a bit blurry because I didn't use flash... the flash photo I took is more clear, but takes away the richness. So here you have it, guys. Love.

Dear Everyone. This is a very special day, as I have finally bought a bike of my own! His name is Tony, and he is a candy apple red (a little darker) vintage girl cruiser with tan seat and handlebars. He has those little fender mud guard things, the cutest handlebars and little gold stripe stickers every here and there. I need a lock for him now.

I bought Tony from a guy named Carlos "The Bike Doctor," who set up a ton of bikes at the flea market on 11th and Avenue A (East Village). I woke up this morning at 8.45am, made my way over there, took this bike for a ride around Tompkins Square Park, and decided he was great for me. Carlos was initially holding a Superman-blue Schwinn for me, but this one called out to me immediately.

I always wondered if buying a bike would cure me of my bike obsession and then I would stop this blog. I don't think so, though. You'll hear from me again! But I might talk about Tony a little more often than not :)

This is the exact type of bike that I am looking for. a vintage women's cruiser. three speed or something. Scwinn or Raleigh, but that of course is not a requirement. In a bright or light color - yellow, sky blue, red, green, white, etc. Maybe even black, if the fenders are wonderful enough. I need a basket too. This bike was in SoHo, on the corner of Prince and Greene.

A nice Peugeot, across the street from Enid's on Driggs and Manhattan (Williamsburg). What a high seat, though. It helps me almost perfectly picture what this bike's owner looks like as he's riding through Greenpoint. or Williamsburg. or both (ideally).

This is my first photo of a bike on the subway. This girl walked in on the Brooklyn-bound L train at 6th Avenue. She was still there when I got out at Bedford, around 11.45pm.

If I had a bike - even one I was trying to sell - I would immediately dash out to rescue it if I knew (and saw) that it was sleeting all day. If you don't click on the photo to enlarge, the sign says that it was $50, but now it's FREE ("Just dig it out"). poor bike. This was on the corner of N7th and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.

I like it when people are passionate about something enough to go all the way. This guy's bike (on Prince and Mercer in SoHo) is not only orange, but it has orange wheels and a partially-orange U-lock. nice. brightened my otherwise gray morning.

because I have forgotten about some bicycles that I took photos of months ago! My friend Joe showed me a photo of the hot pink bike that he had taken, and it reminded me of it. When I could find it in my blog, I investigated my iPhoto and found two more also. These three photographs were all taken on 15 September 2006.

I remember that the white girl bike was outside of the Laundry on Graham, unsurprisingly on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg. I wish that the car parked there would have been a different color, so that the beautiful contrast could have been shown.

The sea green cruiser - now, I'm not so sure about where I saw this one. I can't believe I didn't write it down.

The hot pink bike was also spotted near the Graham Avenue L in Williamsburg.

I always get excited when I see a yellow bike. And this is a girl bike, too! With cute little stripey sticker things on it. This is the type I hope to get in the spring of 2007. with a U-lock. and a Polaroid photo in the wheel.

This is what Laura and I call the World War II bike. We have seen it three times since the end of August... it is painted in matte gray. I think this was the corner of Nassau and Bedford, in Greenpoint Brooklyn.
